I never need much of an excuse to visit The Lake District, and when Hilary James and I were invited to play at The Gather in Ennerdale Bridge we jumped at the chance (concert details here).
This workshop takes place on the afternoon before our concert. Most of the workshops I’ve hosted in recent years have been two or three day gatherings, so on this occasion I’ll be trying to cram everything I know about mandolin playing into two 90 minute sessions!
I’ll be talking about getting a good basic technique and avoiding bad habits, and hopefully pushing your boundaries a little, and trying to de-mystify music theory along the way.
We’ll play some things by ear, but I’ll also send a couple of PDFs of music/tablature with guide MP3s in advance. For these, to be able to read music (a bit of a learning curve) or tablature (very easy) would be helpful, although if your ear is really good you could just use the sound file.
How good do I have to be? All are welcome, and I’ll try my best to pitch the level at those who attend, but ideally you’ll be able to get from start to finish of a fairly simple tune without stalling.
